Wonderful interview. When Sterling's much anticipated book, 'Beyond Screenwriting', was first published, I ordered it right away. It contains so much information from a working screenwriters perspective in Hollywood that you never get at workshops and seminars. Sterling gives the reader a process map for understanding the machinations of this industry, how to deliver a quality writing product, tips about setting expectations, and developing professional behaviors as a writer.

I was particularly moved by the openness and honesty of his personal story at the end of the book. The fact that he shared the story of his very humble beginnings gave the book an intimate look at the fire he had to get through, the determination, and focus it took to accomplish his goals as a writer.

Thank you Gray Jones for the podcast. Excellent job. Your comment about 'subtext' was on the mark.

This is great! I'm going to post a link to this in the newsgroup misc.writing.screenplays.moderated. This interview should be of interest to them.

I read Mr. Devolld's book and found it very interesting and informative. Not a tell-all but more of a nuts-and-bolts about the reality of reality TV.

Yes, Gary, it helped my conscience a whole lot: knowing all the work we put into our web series will not go to waste. Thanks.

Hi Dan,

thanks for your comments! I think any writing contest can help your career in a number of ways:

1 - the prize (yes, I know, obvious)

2- the judges, prize organizers and other contestants get to know your work

3- depending on the contest, may give you lots of free advertising

4- something you can put on a résumé or correspondence afterward (winner of a webby award...)

It won't directly get you a job (usually), but in this entrepreneurial landscape, all of the above will be tremendously helpful.

Hope this helps,
Gray.

Great Podcast. Creating a web series is a great way to test your writing: it's cheap, there's not much on the line, you have nothing to lose (except, maybe, some self-respect) and everything to gain (maybe even some self-respect). What are your thoughts on web series competitions, especially the ones that claim to have notable judges? Are they basically a scam for someone to make money, or can they really open the door to a greater number of views? Thanks.
